Costa Rica 2024

Returning to Costa Rica this year was nostalgic, recalling my first visit during college. Shortly after September 11, 2001, I moved out of Wyoming for the first time to study abroad for 4 months. 23 years later, this family-organized trip had challenges and joys. I am grateful to rediscover this special place, to make new memories, and to share some of the images we captured.

I had not visited the Osa Peninsula during my previous trip to Costa Rica and was hopeful for a visit this time. I was delighted to see that brochure from our rental offered a hiking tour in Corcovado National Park, mentioning a “1.5 hour boat ride” and a “totally flat” trail. It sounded a little too good to be true if I’m honest, and I think it is a good thing that the Osa Peninsula is still a very rugged and difficult-to-reach place. It was fortunate that Papu didn't join us as planned. It was physically challenging and quite an adventure for us!

We spotted several animals and I was glad to have brought my Nikon Z7 with a telephoto lens. I suggest you click the images to enlarge the nicer photos and/or if wanting more explanation.

The guide explained how the trees share resources and information with one another not only through mycelium but also here is a literal root that grew from one tree to another. PC: D

The return trip on the boat was more calm. We saw some whales.

D took this shot of the splashing water on the way home to try to capture somewhat how the earlier boat ride was. We decided we’d spent enough time on the boat and elected to opt out of the whale watching tour we had planned for Wednesday.
