Costa Rica 2024

Returning to Costa Rica this year was nostalgic, recalling my first visit during college. Shortly after September 11, 2001, I moved out of Wyoming for the first time to study abroad for 4 months. 23 years later, this family-organized trip had challenges and joys. I am grateful to rediscover this special place, to make new memories, and to share some of the images we captured.

I wanted D to see a cloud forest, but Monteverde, the more famous one, is far away to the north. Looking at the map, the tallest mountain in Costa Rica, Mount Chirripó (12,536 feet) is in the southern part and relatively close, so I started looking around for accessible hikes up toward the mountain.

Cloudbridge Nature Reserve didn’t even exist when I was here in 2001. It was started in 2002 by a couple from South Africa who purchased a cattle ranch adjacent to two national parks to re-establish the native forest.

This ended up being our favorite day! It was a very steep drive on rugged terrain and then a steep hike but the cooler temperatures and change of scenery were delightful. We got a little lost and scared on the way home.

Here are a few videos. It’s hard to capture the scale of things.
